Background: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) leads to chronic end organ damage including the thyroid gland. This is postulated to be due to recurrent hemolysis leading to iron overload, vaso-occlusive crises, micro-vasculature obstruction due to red cell entrapment and frequent transfusions.
